Agriculture Literacy Day Set For March 23
The seventh annual Florida Agriculture Literacy Day is scheduled for Tuesday March 23, 2010, and Florida agriculture industry volunteers are invited to read a new children’s book written in honor of the event.
“Green Florida Farms” is a rhyming book developed this year by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and is a sequel to last year’s Agriculture Literacy Day book “These Florida Farms!” Gary Seamans and Mike Wright, of the department’s Division of Marketing and Development, wrote and illustrated both books.
In “Green Florida Farms,” students learn how Florida farmers continue to develop “green” environmental practices that conserve the state’s natural resources while providing food, fiber and other agriculture products for Floridians and their trading partners.
Registration for Florida Agriculture Literacy Day begins in January, and online registration will be available on Florida Agriculture in the Classroom’s web site at www.agtag.org. Books, lessons and packets for teachers and bookmarks and other materials for students will be sent out in February. The deadline to register to read on Florida Agriculture Literacy Day is March 12, 2010.
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services employees, University of Florida IFAS extension agents, 4-H agents and master gardeners, Florida Farm Bureau members, Florida Cattlemen and Cattlewomen members, FFA teachers and students and other agriculture industry representatives are asked to schedule their classroom visits at least two weeks before their readings.
