Marcia Lightsey of Lake Wales, whose family owns several Central Florida cattle ranches known for their progressive environmental practices, has been named “Woman of the Year in Agriculture” for 2009. Florida Agriculture Commissioner Charles H. Bronson is scheduled to present the award on February 4, 2010, during the opening-day luncheon at the Florida State Fair in Tampa.

Four agricultural leaders will be inducted into the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame in Tampa on February 9, 2010. They are Richard Alger of Homestead, Ben Hill Griffin III of Frostproof, Rudy Hamrick of Madison, and Dan McClure of Bradenton (deceased).

Shoppers in England can "Taste the Warmth of Florida Sunshine" in January and February when Florida pink grapefruit are featured in 220 Waitrose stores in and around London. The promotion builds on a multiyear marketing relationship between Waitrose and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

In addition to being fun, Florida's county fairs and livestock shows benefit local communities in many ways. They help young people develop into responsible adults by providing youths in 4-H and FFA with a forum to display their work and earn recognition.
