Disaster Relief
As the lead agency for Emergency Support Function (ESF) 11, the Bureau of Food Distribution provides food, water and ice to disaster relief organizations serving persons impacted by a disaster. Operating as part of the Human Services Branch at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Tallahassee, ESF 11 fulfills requests for food, water and ice from organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. ESF 11 works closely with ESF 6 (Mass Care), ESF 15 (Volunteers and Donations), and other EFSs to accomplish its missions. In disaster situations, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) can authorize the Bureau of Food Distribution to release USDA commodities to disaster relief organizations. These commodities are allocated to schools as part of the National School Lunch Program and are stored in schools and warehouses throughout the state. Disaster relief organizations like the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army use the commodities for mass feeding in shelters, comfort stations and other mass feeding sites.
